Dalma Sarnyai is a Vienna-based flutist rooted in classical music. She performs as a soloist and in ensemble settings, with a particular focus on contemporary repertoire and experimental formats. Alongside concert performance, she is involved in interdisciplinary and site-specific projects that expand the traditional role of the perfomer.Dalma collaborates with composers, performers and artists from different disciplines, and has been involved in projects presented at venues including the Cité de la Musique in Paris, Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich and Vienna Design Week. She studied at the mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where she completed the diploma programme concert flute with distinction in 2023.She has received important artistic impulses in classical flute performance from Wally Hase, Andrea Lieberknecht, Walter Auer and Gergely Ittzés, among others. Her work in contemporary and interdisciplinary contexts has been shaped by artists such as Claire Chase, Georg Nussbaumer, Michikazu Matsune, as well as through programmes including the Darmstädter Ferienkurse, Impulstanz and Wiener Festwochen. In 2023 she was awarded the Density2036 scholarship, founded by Claire Chase, supporting her engagement with contemporary and interdisciplinary practice.
My work moves between interpretation and collaboration, shaped by different cultural and institutional contexts. Rather than presenting music as a closed form, I approach it as a situation that unfolds in relation to space, context and presence.Growing up between different cultural and institutional environments has shaped the way I perceive belonging - not as something stable, but as something that can be negotiated. This perspective informs my artistic practice, where I seek to create spaces in which different experiences and forms of listening can coexist.I am drawn to music that allows for this openness: sound as something physical, temporal and relational. In this sense, performance becomes less about delivering a work and more about entering a shared field of attention.

"The Artistic Research Project Creative (Mis)Understandings is based on a collaboration between poet-singers of the indigenous Tao group from Taiwan and composers and sound creators trained in the tradition of European Art Music. The project aims to create strategies which on the one hand contribute to revitalizing Tao cultural practices in a sustainable way, and on the other hand redefine social roles of European, academically trained composers and sound creators."
